Drug Uses
Carafate is used for healing and prevention of ulcers. It may also be used for other situations as suggested by your physician.
How Taken
Use Carafate as directed by your physician. Use Carafate on an empty stomach at least one hour before or 2 hours after a meal. Don't use an antacid for at least 30 minutes before or after taking this drug. It can take 4 to 8 weeks for complete healing of your ulcer. Continue taking Carafate for the full course of treatment even if you feel better. Do not take Carafate at the same time as other medicines. Take Carafate at least two hours after other drugs. If you are not sure about the best time to take Carafate, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
More Information
Carafate can cause dizziness. These effects may worsen if Carafate is taken with alcohol or certain other medications. Take Carafate with caution. Don't drive or perform other possibly negative tasks until you know how you respond to this drug. If your symptoms do not improve or if they worsen, ask your doctor. Carafate should be used only by the patient for whom it has been recommended. Don't use less or more or use it more often than directed by your physician.
